Much of Funding Will Help Renovate Housing for Military Families

TOBYHANNA - Today, Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11) announced almost $2.8 million for Tobyhanna Army Depot for repairs and construction for military family housing, upgrades to the water distribution system, and other renovations.  The federal funding was allocated as a result of the recovery package that Congress passed on February 13.  Among other things, the funding will help improve the conditions for military families living in housing at Tobyhanna.

"It is rewarding to see that funding from the recovery package will help important facilities in Northeastern Pennsylvania like the Tobyhanna Army Depot," said Congressman Kanjorski.  "The employees at Tobyhanna provide a valuable service to the area and to the country.  The almost $2.8 million allocated in the recovery package allows us to give something back to them by, among other things, helping to renovate housing for military families living on the installation.  These service members have given a great sacrifice for their country by joining the military, and I am pleased to know that they and their families receive the care they deserve.  As the area's only military installation, these housing units provide a valuable service to the military personnel at Tobyhanna."

Some of the funding will go to renovating Tobyhanna's 40 Army Family Housing units for military families.  Built in the 1970s, most of the homes are in need of significant renovations and the funding will allow for needed renovations.  The work will include the replacement of porch awnings and exterior renovations.  The federal funding will also allow for the demolition of two older units that are beyond economical repair, and the construction of two new units, along with roadways, sidewalks and utility extensions.

Additionally, the funding from the recovery package will allow for upgrades of Tobyhanna's water distribution system to better accommodate the depot's operations, facilities and personnel.  The upgrades will increase water pressure and provide greater system flexibility by adding water mains and valves.

At the end of September 2008, Congressman Kanjorski helped secure $15 million for Tobyhanna for the installation's refinishing center.  The refinishing center allows for Tobyhanna to rework and clean up military machinery after it is used during tours of duty.
