Kanjorski Announces SAFER Grant Application Period Open

WASHINGTON - Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11) today announced that the application period has begun for the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) grants. The deadline for SAFER grant applications is 5 p.m. on June 30, 2006.

Congressman Kanjorski, who has been a strong supporter of the legislation that provides the funding for hiring and retaining firefighters, urges all fire companies in his Congressional District to apply for SAFER grants.

Fire departments can apply for SAFER grants to hire additional firefighters. State or local organizations and volunteer or combination fire departments can apply for SAFER grants for the purpose of volunteer recruitment and retention.

Applications are available through the same Web site used for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, http://www.firegrantsupport.com/. A tutorial designed to instruct applicants about the competitive application and submission process is available on this Web site.
