Kanjorski Announces $6.1 Million Defense Contract for Dunmore Company

WASHINGTON-Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (PA-11) today announced that Specialty Defense Systems in Dunmore was awarded a $6.1 million contract to produce internal frame packs for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

"I am pleased that a company in my district is able to provide this very important product to the men and women serving in our armed forces," Congressman Kanjorski said. "It is critical that our service members have the right equipment."

The field packs, which are sturdy, oversized, camouflage backpacks, are the preferred cold-weather packs of the defense community. The backpacks have an adjustable suspension and a main compartment that divides in half. The pack has three outside pockets and a detachable assault pack.

Specialty Defense Systems Executive Vice President Sean Martin is extremely pleased with the contract.

"It's a significant piece of business to help to ensure our company's both near- and long-term future," Mr. Martin said. "The Congressman has been extremely helpful in supporting us with many of our proposals, ensuring they get the maximum attention from the decision-making authorities. He is supportive of our continued efforts in making sure the equipment is available for our troops who are deployed and who are being redeployed."

The award guarantees the continued employment of 40 individuals.

The work is expected to be finished by April 30, 2005.

The announcement comes a year after Congressman Kanjorski toured Specialty Defense Systems at 503 Sherwood Ave., Dunmore. The plant, which employs 80 people, was founded in 1969.
